Hyundai IONIQ 5 Overview
First unveiled to the world in 2021, the IONIQ 5 is Hyundai’s electric compact crossover SUV and the first car of the Korean marque’s electric-focused IONIQ sub-brand. The IONIQ 5’s design takes inspiration from the Hyundai Pony and features the brand’s Parametric Pixel design which can be seen in the headlights, taillights, and most noticeably, the wheels.
The IONIQ 5 is the first vehicle constructed on top of the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). The IONIQ 5 was launched globally with three variants and all-wheel drive options. For the rear-wheel drive models, the standard range model is capable of achieving a 384 km range, while the long-range model reaches 451 to 481 km, lastly, the extra long-range model can travel up to 488 km according to the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP).
In 2022, the IONIQ 5 racked up awards left and right, being crowned as the car of the year in two countries, then being named EV of the year in two auto magazines, and ending 2022 as Japan’s import car of the year.
In the Philippines, Hyundai Motor Company Philippines announced that they will be bringing the IONIQ 5 to the local market in 2023 with the standard range and long-range variants.
- Launch
-
The IONIQ 5 debuted globally in February 2021, sharing almost the same design as the 45 EV concept presented by Hyundai at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2019. The IONIQ 5 was launched sporting a new design language and platform from Hyundai, with the primary focus being the new E-GMP platform that future Hyundai EVs will be built on. Here in the Philippines, Hyundai Motor Company Philippines have officially announced that the IONIQ 5 EV will be coming soon, with its launch date already set within the first months of 2023. The IONIQ 5 will be available in two rear-wheel drive variants, the standard, and long-range models.
- Platform, Chassis and Powertrain
-
The IONIQ 5 is built on top of Hyundai’s newly developed E-GMP platform which will be the platform of future EVs built by Hyundai. As for its dimensions, the whole vehicle measures 4635 mm long, 1890 mm wide, and stands 1605 mm tall. It is powered by a Permanent Magnet Synchronus electric motor pushing 168 hp and 350 nm of torque for the standard range model, the long-range model gets some extra power putting out 214 hp.
Power is supplied by a liquid-cooled Lithium-Ion battery pack. According to Hyundai, the standard range model can reach 384 km on a single charge while the long-range model can travel an extra 64 km with a total range of 451 km. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a single-speed reduction gear-type transmission.

Creature comforts and entertainment are generously provided inside the IONIQ 5. Both standard and long-range variants come equipped with a large 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with tweeters to complement the speaker system. The car also comes equipped with a charging pad for wireless charging and outlets. To complement the pleasant interior, the vehicle has mood lamps that can be changed to alter the atmosphere of the interior. Cargo lamps and luggage lamps are also fitted for convenience. Both variants have auto-temperature dual-zone air conditioning for comfort. Exclusive to the long-range variant is a power-operated liftgate, and a speaker system developed by Bose.
- Exterior
-
The IONIQ 5 has simple lines and edges, featuring Hyundai’s Parametric Pixel design, the IONIQ 5’s design is punctuated by geometric shapes than flowing curves. At the front, the IONIQ 5 sports a clamshell hood that incorporates the side fenders into the whole hood reducing panel gaps while simultaneously improving aerodynamic performance. Below the front end of the hood are four U-shaped headlights reminiscent of the square headlights of old. At the back are four beveled rectangular taillights that carry the pixel design Hyundai wants to impart on the IONIQ 5.
Moving on to the side of the IONIQ 5, there are fender flares that are similar in appearance to the shutter of a camera, underneath them are massive 20-inch rims that are also designed to have a geometric almost turbine-like appearance. The standard range model’s wheels feature the same geometric design but are slightly smaller at 19 inches. The doors also have a unique design to them, there is a horizontal crease running along the side of the car, starting from the rear of the car all the way to the door panel where it meets another crease running diagonally towards the rear wheel well forming a 45-degree angle.
At the back are four rectangular taillights with rounded edges, the lights are not one whole piece but are made up of smaller squares of lights that make up the entire taillight. The taillights are within a single piece of trim that occupies the entire midsection of the tailgate, in the center of it all is the IONIQ 5 nameplate. Just under the tailgate is a steel-colored piece of trim that carries the same horizontal slits found at the front and sides.
- Interior
-
Inside, the IONIQ 5 is spacious thanks to the E-GMP platform, another benefit that the platform provides is that it allows the IONIQ 5 to have a flat floor, meaning more legroom for passengers and with a bit of engineering, the central console can move forward and back.
Meanwhile, the dashboard is dominated by two 12-inch screens, one for the gauge cluster and another screen for the infotainment system. The shifter is mounted behind the wheel of the car giving the center area more space for items and cubby holes. Moving topside, the roof of the IONIQ is one large piece of glass with solar panels incorporated into it, the lack of obvious support materials makes the entire interior of the car appear more spacious than it actually is.
Appearance-wise, the interior is swathed in white leather and gray trim pieces complemented by ambient lighting from the IONIQ 5’s mood lamps. The appearance gives off a premium feel and is a fitting style choice for the futuristic EV.
- Safety
-
The IONIQ 5 comes with dual front airbags as well as side and curtain airbags on both variants as standard. Other safety features that come in both variants include ISOFIX anchors, ABS, a brake assist system, electronic stability control, electronic stability control, blind spot collision avoidance warning, blind spot collision avoidance assist, parking distance warning for both front and rear ends, tire pressure monitoring system, blind spot view monitor, and a surround- monitor.
On the other hand, the long-range variant gets a driver attention warning system, Rear-Cross traffic collision avoidance, Lane-keep assist, and forward collision avoidance assist.
